I had the pleasure of making a custom papercutting to commemorate the life of Max the collie via my etsy shop... I was pretty happy with how it turned out...
I do my silhouettes from photographs, so it was just a matter of staying true to Max's original shape. That, and lots of teeny tiny snips of my scissors!
