The Life of a 6 Year Old

That boy of mine returns to school in three weeks (our district starts up on September 4th, the day after Labor Day, which also happens to be my wedding anniversary), and I am not ready. Our life is about to change drastically, as he enters the ranks of all-day school kids. No more care-free days of Summer...

Eat and play, play and eat. Oh, and "chek FOR eGGS". The life of a 6 year old in Summer is positively perfect. And can you believe the audacity of a Mother that let the evNiNG SNACk slip by? Good grief.

He'll be in the First Grade this year, away from me for most of every day. As I think about what that will be like, for the first time I find myself understanding the appeal of home-schooling. That is such a long amount of time to be away from my baby. And for five days out of the week, too.

But he is very excited, as I remember being very excited at the beginning of each new school year. And I will make it through, just as millions of mothers have made it through before me. And we will enjoy our evenings and weekends together that much more for having been apart during the week. Right?

Right.

Jack starts school when I used to...after Labor Day! But now, the kids in our district started today, at least K-9. The high school kids, 10-12, start tomorrow. I'll miss my grandson, who will be a senior this year! Where did the time go? I still think of him as that baby that I got to babysit for 3 years. Now he's taller than I am!

Oh I remember that first day of big kid school. So exciting! I hope your son loves school. Enjoy those kids of yours. As you face first grade with your oldest, I'm facing my youngest going to college and leaving me with an empty nest. The time goes fast, so hug those kids as much as possible!

I love his list!

My oldest is a 5th grader, middle a 2nd and the baby is doing preschool. Our kindergarten is full day and I am not looking forward to that next year. It's going to be hard not having one with me all the time.
